Update on Blog Status

This past weekend I tried to make the leap from WordPress.com to self hosting HeyStephanie.com. If you visited over the weekend you would have noticed that my blog was down and/or timing out – that was my weekend of madness.

Long story short, the move didn’t work out the way I wanted it to and it caused more frustration and aggravation than I had hoped for. I won’t go into details but I will say that the lesson learned was, “If it’s not broken, don’t fix it.” I’m perfectly happy with my blog hosted at WordPress.com but that doesn’t mean I won’t take another stab at self-hosting. It just means that when the time comes, I’ll most likely find someone to do it for me at a reasonable cost. Work smarter not harder right? šŸ™‚

With that said, I want to say thank you to everyone that took the time to help me and contacted me to let me know if the site was loading or not.

Special thanks to these awesome folks below, you guys rock!

Yeah, self hosting is TOUGH AS HELL! But so worth if it you can get it to work. Nothing like having power over your blog.

I agree Elaine. I can’t wait to get it up and running properly. I’m shooting for end of the month since I’m anticipating that I’ll get more free time then.

    Hey Stephanie,

Sorry to hear you ran into technical difficulties. I’ve thought about switching to self-hosted but haven’t had time and WordPress.com works well overall. Is it fairly easy to transfer all of your posts and content? Or was that the problem for you?

    Hi Mike,

WordPress.com does work very well and I’ve never experienced any downtime here. As for self-hosting, it was easy to transfer all of my posts and comments. However, any videos that were featured in a post via VodPod had to be updated. Thankfully, I only had a small number of posts so it wasn’t much trouble.

The biggest problem I ran into was after installing wordpress in my directory, the visual editor toolbar and theme preview was disabled. In addition to that, 48 hrs after self-hosting my host was down for 6 hours and no one from their company contacted me. I ended up contacting my host and they kept delaying the resolution time. That’s not my idea of great customer service.

I think it all has to do with which host you choose. I moved from wordpress.com to a self-hosted blog through bluehost. I love them, and they have one-click wordpress install. It was all very easy, and the customer service has been great!
